Emergency Response (Swimming Pools)

Hotel Pool

The Emergency Response Pool course is designed to help pool operators meet Health and Safety requirements, as set out by 'Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools' (HSG 179), by training staff to respond to an emergency situation. It is also designed to train ancillary staff (gym instructors, reception team, etc.) to back up and support the lifeguard team in emergency situations.

Paragraph 113 of HSG 179 states that

“When the pool is in use, there must be a safe system of work to identify a person in difficulty and ensure that a rescue can be performed. For example, in the absence of lifeguards there should be designated ‘on-call’ competent staff, to respond immediately to deal with any emergency. They should be suitably trained and capable of reaching the poolside in time to perform a rescue and provide emergency first aid if the alarm is raised.”

This qualification is designed for hotels, health clubs, schools, etc. where lifeguards may not be provided, and to assist operators to meet these requirements of HSG 179. However, pool operators should consider their supervision requirements as constant poolside supervision by lifeguards provides the best assurance of pool users safety.

The Emergency Response Programme is also designed to train ancillary staff to back up and support the lifeguard team (if available) and staff to respond to an emergency.

For more information on lifeguard qualifications, please see the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification.
